Religious Freedom at Bethesda:
The Bethesda Addictions Treatment & Rehabilitation Center is an internationally recognized Addictions Treatment Facility registered by the Department of Social Development of South Africa.
By law, religious orientations or practices cannot and will not be imposed upon any of our clients. Clients are free to practice their own and/or no religion whilst they are in our care.
We believe as a primary addiction treatment facility that before anything else can be achived including religious/spiritual understanding, the addiction needs to be addressed first.
We are unable to provide Kosher and Halaal food. Any other personal dietary requirements or preferences must be discussed with us before admission, in order to establish whether or not we will be able to assist in that regard.
“We are Addiction Specialists, you bring an addiction, we’ll turn it into something special.”
Bethesda Addictions Treatment Centre started in 2005 in Storms River Village in the Eastern Cape and we quickly became known as a ‘Christian Rehab’, primarily because our name Bethesda evokes Biblical images from it’s use withIN The Gopsel of John chapter 5 – the story is one where there is a ‘festivle of the Jews’ taking place in Jerusalem but Jesus is not found in amongst the celebrating masses, He is found visiting what was a health spa, or a hospital type of spa. The Spa was called’Bethesda’ – meaning House of Grace – and it is recorded that ‘multitudes’ attended Bethesda suffering from a wide range of ailments like blindness, general sickness, those who were lame, blind even those who are described as ‘withered’. We are told how one particular man had been there for a period of thirty-eight years suffering from a sickness. Jesus asks him “do you really want to get well”? – We could be justified in quietly thinking ‘what a stupid question’ – but if we really look at the story, this guy does not answer the question, he seems to blame and resent everyone else for getting to the pool before him. It could be said that he wanted to be well without putting in any footwork of his own. As I (Colin Garnett) prepared to open an addiction treatment facility, and as my wife Deanna and I considered what might be an appropriate name for such a faculity, this picture from the scripture kept coming to mind. So as I studied this text, I also saw how 90% of the addicts that I had ever worked were all empitomised within the reactions of this guy; everyone says that they want recovery, but when it comes down to taking personal responsibility for their addiction, not many want to put that much foortwork in, they want someone else to get them well – Bethesda was born.
From day one we started to get phone calls from deeply confused Christian families with addicted husbands, wives, sons and daughters and we kept hearing a very similar story, it sounded something like this: “our son/daughter gave his life to Jesus when he was 8, or 9 (or whatever), and we now believe that he/she has been possessed by this demon of addiction since he was 15. We have claimed victory in Jesus’ Name and we have bound up Satan in Jesus Name and we really believe that God has a call on this childs life”.
They then send their child to Bethesda Drug Rehab where we have invariably found these youngsters to have very little if any true conversion experience of their own, and their families now wait at home for the miracle to happen. I personally believe that this family imposed Christianity is creating more casualties than converts
Please Note: Whilst we believe that God could choose to use any of the various ‘gifts of His Spirit’ in and through whom anyone of His choice, we also believe that it could also be described as consistant of Him for Him to remove some aspects of His giftings once they have fulfilled His purpose and so we remain open for correction as long as correction is in line with clear Biblical teaching and supported by secondary clear Biblical teaching. Therefore we are not a charasmatic movement per se, and we are in no way affiliated to any charismatic movements.
Whilst we do acknowledge the spiritual frustrations within our clients, we do not look for demons behind every tree, under every stone, or hold them responsible for every lie.
Whilst we are not ashamed of our faith, but we are a treatment based facility.
Our approach is clinical and our guidance is towards each individual taking personal responsibility for their own feelings, attitudes, behaviours, choices and consequences.
For The Record: Our Biblical belief is well documemted within the following YouTube clip of Justin Peters and if ever we are asked to explain any type of Biblical interpretation, anything we teach will reside within this framework :
